Traffic Operations

Traffic Control Centre

Transport SA’s Traffic Control Centre (TCC) located at Norwood forms the central hub of a comprehensive and advanced data gathering system which manages Adelaide’s traffic flow.

Many people take the operation of traffic lights for granted. The state-of-the-art facility and the equipment that is required to keep the traffic flowing in Adelaide amaze first-time visitors to the Traffic Control Centre (TCC) at Norwood.

In fact, the Traffic Control Centre somewhat resembles the bridge of the Starship Enterprise or even NASA Ground Control with its wall of television monitors, large workstations, communication equipment, and highly sophisticated computer systems.

On a tour of the Traffic control Centre, visitors can

  • view, in real time, computer generated images of any of the 580 traffic signal sites connected to the ACTS (Adelaide’s Coordinated Traffic Signal) system (you can even request the operator to dial up an intersection that is near your home or on your travel route)
  • view camera images from 24 traffic signal sites around the metropolitan area as well as 9 sites along the Expressway
  • look at the Traffic Management System for the reversible Southern Expressway
  • view the Tunnel Management System for the Heysen Tunnels
    • see the operators at work handling calls from the public and other stakeholders via the
      • emergency phone network
      • 1800 free call number
      • Police radio
      • roadworks reports.
  • observe them taking remedial action such as
    • manually overriding signals to
      • help emergency vehicles arrive more quickly at their destination
      • ease traffic flow near accidents, vehicle breakdowns and other incident sites
      • get people home quicker after major events.
      • respond to traffic volumes and build-ups
      • modify sequence times (eg short green times)
  • sending maintenance crews to clean up debris, replace lights or repair signal faults
  • requesting Police attendance at the site of an accident
  • calling for RAA to assist a breakdown on the Southern Expressway and the South Eastern Freeway.
