Mawson Connector ( Elder Smith Road ) & Mawson Transport Hub

Elder Smith Road (Mawson Connector)

The Mawson Connector, known as Elder Smith Road, is a two-lane connector road from Salisbury Highway to Main North Road that includes an overpass over the railway lines.

Main Street to Main North Road section

Construction of Elder Smith Road, from Main Street at Mawson Lakes to Main North Road at Parafield was finished in 2007.

This $11.3 million, 1.3km section of Elder Smith Road includes a new signalised intersection at the junction of Main North Road and Maxwell Road.

It has reduced the volume of traffic on other arterial roads by providing an alternative route to the Port Adelaide area from Main North Road and areas to the north. It also provides additional access to the Mawson Town Centre, University of South Australia and Technology Park, as well as to the Mawson Transport Interchange.

New bicycle lanes better connect with the new bicycle facilities at the Mawson Transport Interchange.

Salisbury Highway to Main Street section

The section of Elder Smith Road , between Salisbury Highway and Main Street , Mawson Lakes was opened to the public in March 2006.

This 1.1 kilometre section provides access to the Mawson Interchange, via Salisbury Highway and Main Street . It also provides additional access to the Mawson Lakes Town Centre and the University of South Australia .

New traffic signals have also been installed at the intersections of Elder Smith Road with Main Street and also with Salisbury Highway .

The Mawson Interchange

The Mawson Public Transport Interchange project was a $33 million State Government funded transport initiative completed in March 2006.

It provides integrated bus and passenger train interconnection and services. It also provides a drop off area and car park with direct access for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists from Elder Smith Road , Mawson Lakes Town Centre, the University of South Australia and Technology Park .

Features of the Interchange include:

  • Kiss & Ride (drop off area for commuters) and Park ‘n' Ride facilities with over 100 car park spaces
  • staffed kiosk
  • linking of rail and bus services
  • stair and lift access to both platforms
  • sheltered well lit platforms
  • air conditioned departure lounge
  • electronic passenger information system
  • closed circuit TV security system
  • secured bike lockers.

The key aim of this transport interchange is to increase the use of public transport to and from Mawson Lakes by encouraging alternative forms of transport such as the bus and train, thereby reducing road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.

Most trains at the new interchange will connect to buses servicing the Mawson Town Centre and the adjacent University of South Australia campus, Endeavour College and Technology Park .

The new interchange also provides local residents express access to and from the city by train. Express trains will take approximately 13 minutes to complete the journey between Mawson Lakes and the Central Business District (CBD), while stopping trains will take 17 to 20 minutes.
