Bakewell Underpass Project - Transport routes during construction
Motorists
Motorists travelling towards the city, on Henley Beach Road, will be able to access the city via either:
- East Terrace and onto Port Road
- James Congdon Drive and onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive.
Motorists travelling from the city will be able to access Henley Beach Road via either:
- West Terrace and then Sir Donald Bradman Drive onto James Congdon Drive
- West Terrace and then Port Road onto East Terrace.

A number of modifications such as lane use changes and signal phasing will be made at the following intersections:
- South Road / Henley Beach Road
- Sir Donald Bradman Drive / South Road
- Sir Donald Bradman Drive / West Terrace
- Port Road / East Terrace / George Street
- Currie Street / West Terrace / Glover Avenue
- Sir Donald Bradman Drive / James Congdon Drive
Motorists should be aware of the need to allow additional time to travel between the western suburbs and the city during the construction period for the Bakewell Underpass. In particular, airline passengers, who use Sir Donald Bradman Drive or Henley Beach Road to access Adelaide Airport, should allow extra travel time in case of delays on these routes, particularly at peak periods.
Bus users
Buses will detour while the underpass is under construction. This will result in the following changes to bus routes beginning Sunday 15 October 2006.
Henley Beach Road Routes 130 - 139
- Buses travelling to the city on Henley Beach Road will detour via East Terrace, Port Road and West Terrace to Currie Street.
- Buses travelling from the city via Currie Street will detour via West Terrace, Port Road, East Terrace and onto Henley Beach Road.
Route 135 (city – Henley Beach Road – Marion Road – Glenelg) will feature new express services in peak times. This service route 135X will be non stop between West Terrace and Marion Road.

Sir Donald Bradman Drive Routes J1, J2, 276 and 278
- Buses travelling to the city will travel via Sir Donald Bradman Drive (rather than use South Road and Henley Beach Road) and turn north onto West Terrace to Currie Street.
- Buses travelling from the city via Currie Street will detour via West Terrace and Sir Donald Bradman Drive.

South Road , Mile End – New Route 270
A new bus route, 270, will provide access to South Road between Henley Beach Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive between 7.25 am and 5.05 pm weekdays only.
A one way loop route will depart the city via Grenfell and Currie Streets (using the same stops as Route 278), West Terrace, Port Road, East Terrace, Henley Beach Road, South Road, Sir Donald Bradman Drive, West Terrace, Currie Street and Grenfell Street back to the city.
Passengers wishing to use this service from South Road will need to wait on the eastern side of South Road. Stops on the western side will not be serviced.

Train commuters
Commuters boarding at the Mile End and Keswick Stations may notice minor differences in boarding arrangements. Appropriate signage will be provided at the station.
There is not expected to be any impact to train users until early 2007, when minor delays may be experienced for a short period while preliminary works are undertaken to construct the railway bridge. Further notice will be provided closer to the time.
Pedestrians
Pedestrians who come from or go to the Mile End Railway Station or the Park Lands will not be able to use Bakewell Bridge after Sunday 15 October 2006.
Instead access will be provided, as shown below, via:
- a signalised crossing of Henley Beach Road as part of the temporary signalised intersection of Henley Beach Road and James Congdon Drive / East Terrace
- a signalised crossing of James Congdon Drive adjacent to Hughes Street. This signalised crossing will be operational from approximately 8 am until 4 pm each weekday. Crossing outside of these times will still be possible using the existing non-signalised facilities
- the existing level crossing and pedestrian underpass across the rail corridor (adjacent to the Mile End Railway Station) to a new temporary path across the Park Lands to Glover Avenue. To assist with pedestrian safety, the rail crossing will be monitored between approximately 8 am and 4 pm each weekday, by an officer trained in road and rail safety.

Cyclists
Cyclists have the choice of using the same routes as motorists by detouring at the end of Henley Beach Road onto either East Terrace or James Congdon Drive. Alternatively, cyclists can detour along the routes shown in the diagram below.
