Bakewell Underpass Project - Frequently asked questions

Some commonly asked questions about the Bakewell Bridge Replacement Project are answered below.

Why is the bridge being replaced?

The 80-year-old bridge is nearing the end of its structural life and is becoming increasingly costly to maintain and repair. There are currently height restrictions for both road and rail traffic and the bridge. A number of trucks have collided with the bridge causing serious damage. Access for pedestrians and cyclists over the bridge is poor and there is no provision for people with a disability.

Why an underpass?

An underpass will provide strong visual and physical connections between the Park Lands and the urban area. It will also provide open sight lines in to the heritage precinct and uninterrupted views to the city. An underpass will provide better opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists.

How much is the project going to cost?

The replacement of the bridge with an underpass will cost $41 million.

When is the underpass due to be completed?

It is anticipated that the new underpass will be open to traffic by the end of 2007.
