Bakewell Underpass Project - Community interact

Since June 2005, the department has been working with the community to develop a preferred scheme for the replacement structure.

Overall, there has been strong community support for the replacement of the old Bakewell Bridge with a new underpass. In total, over 800 individual contributions have been made to the project.

Key elements identified by the community, for the department to consider in the design and construction of the new structure, have included the need to:

  • make sure there is efficient traffic flow
  • supply a high level of accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as general traffic
  • provide a high level of safety
  • present an ‘appealing’ visual impression that blends with the surroundings
  • minimise impacts on businesses and local residents.

A range of communication activities have been undertaken to increase awareness of this project and provide interested parties with opportunities to contribute including:

Events

Community Open Days have been held in December 2005, April 2006, September 2006 and October 2006.
