Metropolitan Road Management

Transport SA’s Metropolitan Region is responsible for maintaining the region’s

  • road
  • bridge
  • O-Bahn Busway
  • road lighting assets

at a level meeting consumer expectations.

The Metropolitan Region also manages some asset improvement projects such as

  • road widening
  • installation of guardrails.

Almost everyday motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and public transport passengers see the evidence of the Region’s work.

Road maintenance work includes

  • sealing cracked road surfaces
  • resurfacing
  • pavement strengthening
  • line marking
  • installing safety bars
  • treating slick surfaces
  • maintaining drains and road shoulders.

Bridge maintenance issues are structural safety and graffiti removal.

The O-Bahn Busway also requires careful monitoring and attention to maintain it in a serviceable, attractive and safe condition.

For maintenance purposes, the metropolitan area is divided into 3 zones. Under the Metropolitan Region’s management, contractors carry out required work to set specifications.

Transport SA has a clear Environmental Code of Practice. The Metropolitan Region alone plants hundreds of trees and shrubs on road verges each year and conducts an extensive pest plant eradication program.

Road maintenance

Roads are subjected to extensive wear and tear from daily use and weather conditions.

Regular maintenance of our main roads is essential to

  • ensure that our road network remains fit for purpose
  • sustain a safe and efficient system.

Almost every day road users see evidence of the Metropolitan Region’s work in maintaining our State’s road, bridge and busway network, including the O-Bahn Bus Network.

Maintenance involves a wide range of services from

  • scheduled rehabilitation work on road surfaces to
  • emergency responses such as repairing structural damage to a bridge.

Routine maintenance encompasses activities that cannot be planned for eg

  • localised repairs of small defects in the roadway and pavement
  • levelling unpaved surfaces and shoulders
  • regular maintenance of drainage
  • traffic control and safety devices
  • vegetation control
  • graffiti removal.

Larger scale periodic maintenance works are required when the condition of a road reaches a level where routine maintenance becomes uneconomical or inappropriate.

Periodic maintenance can normally be predicted and planned for. The Metropolitan Region works to a 5-year program developed in conjunction with stakeholders and based on information gathered on the condition of the pavement. Periodic maintenance of asphalt and spray sealed roads extends the roads useable life and includes

  • shoulder re-sheeting
  • larger scale pavement maintenance
  • bridge/structure repairs.
