The strategy - to improve road safety

The National Road Safety Strategy 2001 - 2010 and the National Road Safety Action Plan 2001 and 2002 were released in late 2000.

They provide a national framework for the planning and implementation of a wide range of road safety initiatives.

On 17 July 2002 the Transport Minister, Michael Wright announced a road safety package aimed to halve South Australia’s annual road toll, as part of a $20 million road safety package in the State budget.

The comprehensive two stage package approaches the issue of safety on South Australian roads from all directions - improving infrastructure, tightening up regulations, ensuring adequate enforcement and putting in place better driver education and access to information.

The package will also ensure that the State’s legislation is in line with every other Australian State.

Phase one of the package includes tough new penalties for drink driving, running red lights and speeding.

Phase two of the package will include longer term initiatives and require stakeholder consultation with a range of road user groups, with a view to ensuring that everyone is well informed about the changes to road safety and their role in making roads safer.
