Safe Routes to School program
Safe Routes to School is a community based program aimed at improving the road safety of children travelling in their local area. The program addresses the issue of primary school aged pedestrians, cyclists and passengers killed or seriously injured in road crashes in South Australia.
Through an interactive process, Safe Routes to School
- identifies factors involved in children’s crashes
- develops integrated engineering and education action plans to improve road safety.
Who is involved - identifying and reducing
the dangers
The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program involves
- Local Government
- Schools
- School communities
- Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI)
The following groups work together to identify and reduce local road dangers to children
- schools (school principal and teachers)
- parents
- DTEI (SRTS Program Manager, Education Consultant and Traffic Engineer)
- Council traffic engineers.
The program
The program uses information obtained from a travel survey completed at home by children and their parents in order to identify
- how children travel to and from school (pedestrians, cyclists or passengers) and why they choose this mode of transport
- routes that children use to travel to and from school
- difficulties that children experience on those routes as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers.
The survey together with data collected at local problem locations, is used to determine engineering improvements and education strategies.
Once engineering treatments are in place, teachers are assisted by DTEI in planning their school’s Traffic Safety Education Plan to teach children how to use these facilities safely and appropriately.
Road Ready, the education resource for Safe Routes to School, teaches children safer behaviour when travelling as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers.
The Way to Go series of parent information sheets link to the school’s Traffic Safety Education Plan providing valuable information for parents in providing a safer environment for their children when travelling to school. There are 29 councils and 176 schools participating in the program across the state.
