Rail Safety Section
Rail safety in South Australia is regulated by the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure.
All railway managers and/or railway operators within South Australia are required to be accredited in accordance with the Rail Safety Act 1996. The Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure Rail Safety Section is responsible for:
- The promotion, maintenance and enhancement of the safety of private and public sector railways operating in South Australia.
- Rail Safety Accreditation for railway owners and operators in South Australia (in accordance with the national Australian Standard AS4292 and the Rail Safety Act 1996).
- Rail Safety Audit programmes
- Accident and incident data collection and investigation
- The provision of specialist advice to the Minister for Transport, and the rail transport industry on operational and engineering safety and policy advice.
- Coordination of the State Level Crossing Strategy Advisory Committee.
- Assistance in the development of Level Crossing Interface Agreements for use by Road and Rail Owners in South Australia.
As part of the National Rail Reform process agreed by the Australian Transport Council, the National Transport Commission has developed a Model Rail Safety Bill for implementation in all States and the Northern Territory which is anticipated to come into effect in July 2007. South Australia has prepared a draft Rail Safety Bill based on the national Model Bill. The SA Bill has been released for consultation and written submissions will be received until 31 January 2007.
