Whales & boats
In recent years whales have been returning to our waters in increasing
numbers.
Sometimes boat operators manoeuvre their craft too close to
whales in an attempt to get a closer look.
This could be dangerous as a whale, particularly a female with a young calf,
can feel threatened by this behaviour and unexpectedly react. Vessels should
also keep well clear during mating time as whales get quite boisterous.
Whales are protected by both State and Federal laws and heavy
fines apply.
You should keep your vessel at least 300 metres away from
any whales and avoid travelling on a collision course with them. You should
also avoid sudden changes of speed and direction near them and high-speed operation.
Contact your nearest National Parks and Wildlife SA office
if you require further information or wish to report an incident.
