River Murray and lakes low water
levels
All boaters are warned to take extra care when boating on the River Murray and lakes as there is an increasing number of hazards and snags that are appearing near the water's surface. This is due to the drought conditions and resulting low water flows into the River Murray and lakes.
The department is providing information to give the boating community access to recent boating related information
The department is also providing information and photographs to assist in identifying the emerging hazards and give boaters an understanding of where the hazards are before going out on the water. You can view the location and details of the hazards here
As the skipper you are responsible for the safe operation of your vessel and the department urges you to take care over the coming months as low flows continue. There are a number of precautions you can take to ensure safer boating:
- reduce your speed
- know your buoys, marks and beacons
- wear a pfd (lifejacket) at all times
- check for hazards and water depth before high speed activity
- remain in the marked channel
- be more aware of the conditions caused by low water levels – be observant
- don’t drink and boat.
