Distress Signals

These signals must be used only to indicate need of assistance. Misuse of them may put the lives of others at risk and is illegal.

1. Rockets or shells, throwing red stars fired one at a time at short intervals.
2. (a) A signal made by radiotelegraphy or by any other signalling method consisting of Morse Code letters; ••• - - - •••
(b) A signal sent by marine radio consisting of the spoken word: ‘mayday’

3. A square flag having above or below it a ball or anything resembling a ball.

4. A rocket parachute flare or a hand-held flare showing a red light.

5. A smoke signal giving off orange-coloured smoke.

6. Slowly and repeatedly raising and lowering arms outstretched to each side.

7. (a) A rectangle of international orange material with a black letter V; or
(b)A black square and circle; or
(c) A dye marker.

8. The International signal of distress indicated by N.C.

9. (a) Continuous sounding of any fog-signalling apparatus.
(b) Signal transmitted by Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB).
