Construction of new ferries

Five of the existing ferry fleet have timber hulls while the remainder are all steel.  The timber ferries are typically over 50 years old and suitable timber for extensive repairs is no longer readily available.  .

A new prototype all steel ferry, “Albatross II” was constructed in South Australia and has been successfully operating at Cadell since June 2006.

A second ferry is under construction and is expected to be on trial in June 2008.

The new ferry design provides an increased load capacity. A unique feature is the “outrigger pontoons”, which provide a higher level of stability under the various loading combinations of heavy commercial and domestic traffic.
