Every year primary school aged pedestrians, cyclists and passengers are killed or seriously injured in road crashes in South Australia.

The Safe Routes to School program aims to make the trip to and from school safer for primary school aged children who walk, cycle or are driven to school.

This program brings together a cluster of local schools, staff from the local council, Transport SA and members of the school community – to work together to identify and reduce local road dangers to children

The Safe Routes to School program includes:

1. School community involvement
Parents and children identify the main routes used and any problems experienced by children on their way to and from school by completing a travel survey at home on:

  • How children travel to and from school
  • Why they choose this mode of transport
  • The route they travel along
  • Any problems they encounter along the way.

2. Improving local roads
Based on the results of this survey; parents, teachers, local council and Transport SA staff visit the major routes and problem locations to observe the behaviour of children, parents and motorists.

The local council and Transport SA staff consider any engineering improvements that can be made and in consultation with the school and local community install new signs and pedestrian safety treatments.

3. Traffic safety education
Teachers are assisted by Transport SA education consultants to develop a traffic safety education plan to meet the needs of their school community. The program teaches children how to use these facilities safely and teaches safer behaviours when travelling as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers.

Resources included:

  • Road Ready - an up to date traffic safety education curriculum resource
  • Way to Go – a series of illustrated 24 parent and student information sheets including activities for different primary age groups
  • ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think’ reinforcement using signs beside the school exit gates
  • Other activities, bulletins and sessions involving parents and children.
