Road Toll

Road crashes are estimated to have cost South Australia $1.1 billion in 2002. The road toll cost in terms of human and emotional damage is immeasurable. Road crashes on South Australian roads:
  • kill a person every 2 to 3 days
  • injure 24 people each day
  • admit 4 people to hospital every day
  • cause serious damage to over 200 vehicles each day.

South Australia's fatality rate of 10.2 (2003) per 100 000 population is higher than the Australian average of 8.2 (2003). In comparison to the rest of the world:

  • South Australia's fatality rate is close to the median of 11.0 (2000) for OECD countries
  • the UK and Sweden have much lower fatality rates of 6.0 and 6.7 respectively.

The Motor Accident Commission (MAC) is South Australia's Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurer and provides compensation to victims of road crashes. Click here for more information about the MAC, CTP Insurance, and making a claim if you have been injured in a crash.
