Who can hold a trade plate?
You must be able to prove to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles that you need a trade
plate in order to conduct the main activities of your business,
and that you would use the trade plate in accordance with the Regulations of
the Motor Vehicles Act.
Trade plates may be issued to
- individuals
- people involved in a ‘joint ownership’
- companies registered with the Australian Securities Commission.
How to apply for a trade plate
You must apply directly to a Customer
Service Centre for approval.
An ‘Application for Approval for Issue of Trade Plates’ form must
be completed and lodged with primary and secondary documentation.
Primary and secondary documentation
You need to produce
- at least 2 primary documents
or
- 1 primary document and 3 secondary documents
from the list below when lodging the completed ‘Application for Approval
for Issue of Trade Plates’ and ‘Application for a Trade Plate
and Third Party Insurance’ forms.
Primary documents
- Premises / Mobile Workshop Inspection Certificate
- letter of Membership to the Motor Trade Association
- approved Royal Automobile Association Repairer service agreement
- Second Hand Vehicle Dealer’s Certificate
- extract of Business Registration
- extract of Company Registration
- WorkCover Registration Certificate
Secondary documents
- entry in the South Australian Yellow Pages
- entry in the South Australian White Pages
- documented evidence of being an employer in the automotive or allied trades
- Certificate of Registered Business / Company Name
You can also apply to the Motor Trade Association (MTA) for a recommendation
to show that you are suitable to hold a trade plate. For more information contact
the Motor Trade Association.
Plate size
The plate size issued depends on the type of vehicle categories that you nominate.
- a motorcycle sized plate will be issued if the only category nominated
is motorcycle.
- all other vehicle category types and combinations will be issued a standard
vehicle sized trade plate.
Period of issue
A trade plate may be issued for 1, 2 or 3 years. A Certificate and Label will
be issued to you when all the requirements are completed.
