Transferring a registration

If you buy a motor vehicle currently registered in South Australia you need to

1. Check the Vehicles Securities Register before you buy a second hand vehicle privately. This will advise you if there is any debt outstanding on the vehicle.

2. At the time of sale, complete and sign the Application to Transfer Registration on the reverse side of the current registration certificate. The registered owner/operator also needs to sign the application in order to transfer the remaining registration into your name.

3. Send the completed form or apply in person to your nearest Customer Service Centre with the required fee.

If you do not transfer the registration within 14 days from the date of purchase you may be charged a late payment fee and the Registrar of Motor Vehicles may refuse other transactions until the transfer has been completed.

If the person you are buying the vehicle from does not have the current registration certificate, they will need to purchase a copy from a Customer Service Centre. If they are not prepared to do this, you should contact a Customer Service Centre.

Transfer of the registration is different to transfer of ownership, it is in your best interests to obtain a receipt from the person you are purchasing the vehicle from as proof of ownership.
