Transferring a registration between married or defacto couples

In certain circumstances registration of a vehicle may be transferred between husband and wife or defacto couples without payment of stamp duty on the value of the vehicle being required.

Both the husband and wife must complete a statutory declaration available from any Customer Service Centre. This will allow transfer from either

  • one name to joint names
  • joint names to one name
  • one name to the other.

The statutory declaration must be signed and witnessed by a Justice of the Peace.

This exemption only applies to vehicles that are currently registered.

At the time of application you will need to bring

  • the completed statutory declaration
  • the completed application for transfer of registration (on the reverse side of the current certificate of registration)
  • the appropriate transfer fee (The statutory declaration will not exempt you from the transfer fee)

For further information contact a Customer Service Centre.
