Selling a vehicle

Registration must be transferred within 14 days from the date of sale.

If you sell a vehicle you should

    1. At the time of sale, complete and sign the Notice of Disposal on the reverse side of the current Certificate of Registration. The buyer needs to sign the application, thereby confirming the purchase on the date specified. If the Certificate of Registration has been misplaced, a copy can be obtained from a Customer Service Centre. A Notice of Disposal form can be downloaded but must be completed in full.

    2. Send or present the completed form to your nearest Customer Service Centre.

If you do not lodge the Notice of Disposal within 14 days from the date of sale penalties may apply for failing to notify the Registrar regarding the change of ownership of thevehicle.

Transfer of registration is different to transfer of ownership; it is in your best interests to retain the details of the person you are selling the vehicle to.

The person buying the vehicle is required to

  • call into or send the application to transfer to your nearest Customer Service Centre with the required fees within 14 days of the date of sale.
