Overseas vehicle registration
If you become a resident of South Australia and wish to register
a vehicle previously registered overseas the vehicle must satisfy
the following requirements:
- a roadworthy inspection conducted by the department's
Vehicle Services and presentation of relevant paperwork to show
the vehicle complies with Australian Design Rules and
- an identity inspection to ensure the vehicle is not
stolen.

Identity inspections
If you live within a 40 kilometre radius of the Adelaide GPO, the
vehicle can be inspected by

Open: 8 am – 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays)
No appointment is necessary
A fee is required for this inspection
and may be paid at the time of booking or at a Customer
Service Centre.
If you live more than 40 kilometres from the Adelaide GPO , you
can make an appointment for the inspection by phoning

After the vehicle has been inspected, you can apply to register
the vehicle at any Customer
Service Centre by lodging:
You will then be given a registration certificate and label in
your name.
The following fees
may apply:
- registration fee
- third party insurance fee
- stamp duty on insurance
- stamp duty on value*
- number plate fee
- postage fee (if you request the number plates to be posted to
you)
- administration fee, level 3
- Emergency Services Levy
- inspection fees.
Overseas visitor's permit
Overseas visitors travelling through South Australia with an overseas
registered vehicle may apply for a overseas
visitor's permit to drive the vehicle in South Australia .
