Overseas vehicle registration

If you become a resident of South Australia and wish to register a vehicle previously registered overseas the vehicle must satisfy the following requirements:

  • a roadworthy inspection conducted by the department's Vehicle Services and presentation of relevant paperwork to show the vehicle complies with Australian Design Rules and
  • an identity inspection to ensure the vehicle is not stolen.

Identity inspections

If you live within a 40 kilometre radius of the Adelaide GPO, the vehicle can be inspected by

Open: 8 am – 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays)
No appointment is necessary

A fee is required for this inspection and may be paid at the time of booking or at a Customer Service Centre.

After the vehicle has been inspected, you can apply to register the vehicle at any Customer Service Centre by lodging:

You will then be given a registration certificate and label in your name.

The following fees may apply:

  • registration fee
  • third party insurance fee
  • stamp duty on insurance
  • stamp duty on value*
  • number plate fee
  • postage fee (if you request the number plates to be posted to you)
  • administration fee, level 3
  • Emergency Services Levy
  • inspection fees.

Overseas visitor's permit

Overseas visitors travelling through South Australia with an overseas registered vehicle may apply for a overseas visitor's permit to drive the vehicle in South Australia .
