National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council

Motor vehicle theft - a high cost

Motor Vehicle theft is a major concern throughout Australia. A heavy financial burden is imposed on the entire community through costs to the insurance industry and the criminal justice system.

Over 130,000 vehicles are stolen each year, causing 7 in every 1000 people considerable distress and inconvenience. A heavy financial burden is also imposed on the entire community through costs to the insurance industry and the criminal justice system.

Motor vehicle theft also results in the tragic loss of lives with stolen vehicles being involved in numerous fatal accidents every year.

Introducing the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council

The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council has been established by all Australian governments in partnership with the insurance industry to reduce vehicle theft.

It works with all relevant agencies and industry groups to implement initiatives that make vehicles more difficult to steal, improve the exchange of national police and registration data, and lead young offenders away from vehicle theft.

For more information, or to find out the risk of your vehicle being stolen, visit the Council’s website at www.carsafe.com.au.
