Concessions

A concession is a reduction in the fee for registering a motor vehicle or issuing a Drivers Licence.

A concession may be for

  • a person - eg someone who receives an allowable pension
  • a vehicle - eg its construction or use
  • the area in which the vehicle is garaged.

Applying for a concession

You can download an application for concession or obtain one from any Customer Service Centre.

You will need to show proof of your eligibility as detailed below.

Personal concessions
(not available on heavy vehicles with a laden mass greater than 4500 kgs)

Pensioner concession

You may be entitled to this concession if you hold a State Concession Card or a pension card issued by the Commonwealth Government that lets you travel on public transport in South Australia at reduced fares.

Benefits are

  • 50% reduction in the registration fee
  • exemption from the payment of stamp duty on Compulsory Third Party (Bodily Injury) Insurance (This is not a reduction in the insurance premium)
  • 50% reduction in the Drivers Licence fee.

The card must be shown upon application and when renewing your Registration and Drivers Licence.

The concession details will be verified electronically with Centrelink / Department of Veterans Affairs. If the concession details are confirmed, a reduced fee may apply.

You may only receive concession on the registration of 1 motor vehicle (or motor cycle) and 1 trailer (or caravan) that you own and use.

Incapacitated persons concession

You may be entitled to this concession if you have lost the use of one or both legs and for this reason are unable to use public transport.

Benefits are

  • 50% reduction in the registration fee
  • exemption from the payment of stamp duty on Compulsory Third Party (Bodily Injury) Insurance (This is not a reduction in the insurance premium)
  • exemption from the payment of stamp duty on the value of the vehicle.

A medical certificate confirming the disability must be presented on first application.

You can receive concession on the registration of 1 motor vehicle (or motor cycle) that you own and use.

Incapacitated ex-service persons concession

You may be entitled to this concession if as a result of your service in the military you are totally and permanently incapacitated or is blind or has lost a leg or foot or receives a pension from the Commonweath for total incapacity or impairment of motion (at a rate of not less than 70% of the total incapacity pernsion).

Benefits are

  • 66.6% reduction in registration fees
  • exemption from the payment of stamp duty on Compulsory Third Party (Bodily Injury) Insurance. (This is not a reduction in the insurance premium)
  • exemption from the payment of stamp duty on the value of the vehicle
  • 50% reduction in the Drivers Licence fee.

A letter from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs showing total incapacity and eligibility must be presented with your application.. If you are a holder of a GOLD card that is endorsed with the letters TPI (Totally and Permanently Incapacitated) or EDI (Extreme Disablement Adjustment) you may be exempt from producing the letter.

You can obtain a concession on the registration of 1 motor vehicle or motor cycle that you own and use.

Vehicle Concessions

Primary producer concession - Light vehicles (Gross Vehicle Mass less than 4500 kgs)
The benefit is

  • 50% reduction on registration fees.

Only commercial vehicles and commercial trailers are able to obtain this concession.

A primary producer may be engaged in farming, bee keeping, fishing or other similar activity.

If you are applying for a concession as a farmer you must give the location of the land being farmed and state whether the land is owned, leased or sharefarmed. If the land is sharefarmed the current sharefarming agreement must be shown.

If you are an apiarist the number of beehives kept must be stated. You must be registered with the Department of Primary Industries (Agriculture) and have a minimum of 100 hives.

If you are engaged in fishing you must show that a marine scale or restricted marine scale fishing licence has been issued in your name by the Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries).

(Note: A boat trailer is a non-commercial vehicle so you do not qualify for this concession).

Primary producer concession - Heavy Vehicles (Gross Vehicle Mass over 4500 kgs)
The benefit is

  • 40% reduction in registration fees.

A concession is available on rigid vehicles towing trailers, prime movers and commercial trailers only.

Although you cannot obtain concession on rigid vehicles which do not tow trailers, the primary producers insurance class can still be claimed for these vehicles.

Outer areas concession

Outer areas include

  • Kangaroo Island
  • district council of Coober Pedy and Roxby Downs
  • all other parts of the State which are not within a municipality or district council area.

Light vehicles (Gross Vehicle Mass less than or equal to 4500 kgs)
The benefit is

  • 50% reduction in registration fees.

You can obtain this concession on any vehicle, motor cycle or trailer that is used solely or mainly in outside areas.

Heavy vehicles (Gross Vehicle Mass over 4500 kgs)
The benefit is

  • 40% reduction in registration fees.

You can obtain a concession on rigid vehicles towing trailers, prime movers, trailers and buses.
