Buying a South Australian car that is not registered

If you buy a South Australian vehicle that is not registered, you should

  • check the Vehicles Securities Register before you buy the vehicle. This will tell you if there is any debt outstanding on the vehicle.
  • check the status of the vehicle this will tell you if the vehicle is recorded as stolen, or defected.
  • obtain a receipt or a bill of sale from the person you are buying the vehicle from. Be sure to obtain their name and address.

To register the vehicle in your name you must complete an Application for Registration and Third Party Insurance form and call into or mail to your nearest Customer Service Centre.

You will need:

  • your name, address, date of birth
  • your licence/client number
  • name and address of the person you bought the vehicle from
  • vehicle registration (plate) number
  • engine number
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or Chassis Number
  • Vehicle make, type and year of manufacture.

After you pay the fee, a Registration Certificate and Label will be issued to you immediately, or posted to you if you applied by mail.

If you live more than 100 kilometres from the Adelaide GPO, you can also pay for your initial motor vehicle registration at your local country Police Station.
