Registrations

The department has the responsibility for managing the registration of various forms of transport in South Australia. Some of these vehicles may be registered online from this site.

Note that registration differs from licences or certification or permits. If you don’t find what you need under registrations, try the search engine or one of these other links.

Details relating to the various types of registration and associated number plates are accessible below:

  Fees information
  Information regarding all fees in relation to motor vehicles, motor boats, heavy vehicles, stamp duty, trailers and caravans and administration.
   
  Heavy vehicles
  Every vehicle (including prime mover and special vehicle) or trailer with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 4.5 tonnes must be registered as a heavy vehicle.
   
  Motor boats
  All recreational boats fitted with an engine are classed as motor boats and must be registered while under way in South Australian waters.
   
  Motor vehicles
  All motor vehicles on South Australian roads must be registered.
   
  Number plates
  Motor vehicle owners may choose between the standard issue plate or, for an extra fee, choose one of the special plates available.
   
  Trade plates
  You must be able to prove to Transport SA that you need a trade plate in order to conduct the main activities of your business, and that you would use the trade plate in accordance with the Regulations of the Motor Vehicles Act.
