Notice to Mariners No 1 of 2001

South Australia - Gulf St Vincent - Port Adelaide River - Outer Harbor - Seismic Refraction Survey & Bore Sampling

Mariners are advised that commencing 10 January 2001 and continuing for approximately one week, a continuous seismic refraction survey and bore sampling operation will be conducted within the existing shipping channel Outer Harbor and extending about 12 kilometres seaward from the western extremity of the southern breakwater

The Seismic refraction survey commencing on 10 January 2001, involves the vessel "MV Valerie Jane" towing a lightweight acoustic source and hydrophone array along the sea floor at the end of a 200m long cable and is expected to take about 2 days.

The Bore sampling commencing 10 January 2001 will be undertaken from a "jack up" barge established on the sea floor at each investigation site. The barge will be towed between the 6 to 12 investigation sites by the tug "MV Mudgee". Whilst in position the barge and tug will exhibit the appropriate lights and shapes required by the international regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea.

Mariners are advised to proceed with caution while in the vicinity of the vessel "MV Valerie Jane" as well as the tug "MV Mudgee" and "jack up" barge.
