Notice to Mariners No 1 of 2001
South Australia - Gulf St Vincent - Port Adelaide
River - Outer Harbor - Seismic Refraction Survey & Bore Sampling
Mariners are advised that commencing 10 January 2001 and continuing
for approximately one week, a continuous seismic refraction survey
and bore sampling operation will be conducted within the existing
shipping channel Outer Harbor and extending about 12 kilometres
seaward from the western extremity of the southern breakwater
The Seismic refraction survey commencing on 10 January 2001, involves
the vessel "MV Valerie Jane" towing a lightweight acoustic
source and hydrophone array along the sea floor at the end of a
200m long cable and is expected to take about 2 days.
The Bore sampling commencing 10 January 2001 will be undertaken
from a "jack up" barge established on the sea floor at
each investigation site. The barge will be towed between the 6 to
12 investigation sites by the tug "MV Mudgee". Whilst
in position the barge and tug will exhibit the appropriate lights
and shapes required by the international regulations for the prevention
of collisions at sea.
Mariners are advised to proceed with caution while in the vicinity
of the vessel "MV Valerie Jane" as well as the tug "MV
Mudgee" and "jack up" barge.
