Moorings

A mooring is a place where you can tie up your boat. It can be attached to a wharf, jetty or pontoon or it may be a buoy and to ensure the mooring will not pose a hazard to safe navigation.

Before positioning a mooring you should contact your local Marine Safety Officer or Harbourmaster.

There is no charge levied for the positioning of a mooring.

It is the responsibility of the person installing the mooring to make sure it is

  • adequate for the intended purpose
  • adequately maintained and secured.

Consideration needs to be given to the

  • size of the boat
  • prevailing conditions in the location.

To position a new mooring you will need

  • a mud map or sketch of the area showing the location of existing moored boats and indicating where the new mooring is to go
  • a GPS location of the mooring
  • the registration number of your boat.

It may be necessary for the area to be inspected by the local Marine Safety Officer or Harbourmaster before approval.

If the mooring needs to be removed it is the owner’s responsibility and at their cost.

The person installing the mooring is totally liable in case of an accident related to the mooring.
