Developing the Bicycle Network
Each year the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) delivers programs to promote cycling across the State:
- The Arterial Road Bicycle Facilities Improvement Program is for the installation of bicycle lanes and other improvements to cycling facilities on arterial roads.
- The State Black Spot Program-Cycling Projects is specifically for infrastructure projects that directly improve the safety of cyclists on both the arterial road and local road network.
- The State Bicycle Fund is a $ for $ subsidy funding scheme available to all the Councils in SA for projects that improve cycling safety and deliver improved cycling networks.
- Green Cycle Path Funding - In 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 the State Government committed $1M to improve cycling routes that parallel the Glenelg tramway ($500K) and to help complete the Coast to Vines shared use trail ($500K) from Willunga to Marino. Onkaparinga and Marion Councils have provided matching funding for the Coast to Vines Trail.
DTEI also considers opportunities to improve conditions for cyclists whenever new urban road projects or upgrades occur.
