International Visitor’s Permit

Overseas visitors travelling through South Australia with an overseas registered vehicle may apply for a permit to drive the vehicle in South Australia.

You must provide evidence that the vehicle is an overseas vehicle and has legally entered Australia.

The following documentation may be used as evidence:

  • Carnet (a customs licence permitting motorists to take their cars to various countries)
  • Triptych (similar to a carnet, but valid for one trip only)
  • Bond (document to be lodged with the Customs Department)

A permit cannot be issued until the vehicle has arrived in Australia.

An insurance premium fee will apply for the period the vehicle is to be used in Australia..

You will need to fill out an Application for a Visitor’s Permit. This can be done at any Customer Service Centre

If you become a permanent resident, you must register your vehicle in South Australia. See Overseas vehicle registration.

Contact us if you need any further information.
