Short Term Unregistered Vehicle Permits

Short term unregistered vehicle permits are available for vehicles or trailers that are not currently registered, and need to be driven on the road for a specified reason, journey and time.

Permits may be issued for the following reasons

  • vehicle inspections
  • mechanical repairs
  • relocating the vehicle
  • car rallies.

An unregistered vehicle permit may be issued for up to three days in the case of a vehicle inspection for repairs and/or relocation of vehicle.

These permits are issued subject to restrictions which are determined upon application, eg. "vehicle to travel from Noarlunga to Happy Valley using major roads only", "travel to and from Regency Park Inspection Centre on dd/mm/yy only.

Permits are usually only issued for as long as necessary (eg 1 day for a vehicle inspection), however may be granted for a maximum of 3 days.

How do I apply?

You need to complete an Application for Short Term Unregistered Vehicle Permit

You need to bring

  • Plate number of vehicle (if it has one)
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and/or engine number
  • Type of vehicle
  • Make of vehicle
  • Reason for permit
  • Specified route
  • Specified time for the permit

The permit is issued once the required fee is paid.

Refunds are not given on the cancellation of a short term unregistered vehicle permit.

The permit must be attached to the windscreen of your vehicle, or if the vehicle does not have a windscreen, the permit must be carried with you whilst driving the vehicle.
