Special Permit to Operate a Recreational Vessel

This is a form of restricted licence available to children between the age of 12 and 16 years.

A permit entitles the holder to take sole charge of a motor boat

  • of less than 4 metres in length
  • with a potential maximum speed of 10 knots
    or
  • a motor boat of greater length or maximum speed while under the direct supervision of a licensed operator.

A permit holder is not permitted to operate

  • a personal watercraft (pwc)
    or
  • a boat that is towing a water skier. A permit holder can act as an observer, but the licensed operator must be at least 18 years of age.

The test must be taken in a motor boat provided by the applicant and can be conducted at a mutually convenient time and location.
