South Road overpass open to traffic

Permanent traffic changes on Salisbury Highway and South Road junction, Wingfield, will come into effect from tomorrow - Saturday 30 April 2005 - as the South Road overpass east bound carriageway is opened to traffic.

Traffic travelling east will be directed onto the overpass, over the future entry of the Port River Expressway joining up with Salisbury Highway. The new carriageway consists of two lanes and will have a speed restriction of 60 kilometres per hour.

When fully operational, the South Road overpass will connect South Road, Salisbury Highway and the new Port River Expressway. It will allow for uninterrupted traffic flow through this intersection via a north-south overpass above the expressway catering for right-turn movements.

Stage 1 of the Port River Expressway project is scheduled for completion in late June 2005.

Funding for Stage 1 of the Port River Expressway project has been a joint contribution between State and Federal Governments under the Roads of National Importance Program (RONI). This $91.5 million stage is being delivered through a design, construct and maintain (DCM) contract by Bardavcol.
