National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers
The National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers came into effect on the 1 July 2004. It is applicable to all accredited railway organisations in South Australia.
The Standard provides practical guidance for railway organisations to achieve a rigorous and consistent approach to monitoring the health and fitness of rail safety workers. It reflects advances in medical knowledge, recent changes in rail operating environments and developments in privacy and anti-discrimination laws.
The Standard comprises two volumes:
-
Volume 1: Management Systems (PDF, 1.2 MB, 143 pp.) provides accredited rail organisations with practical guidance for implementing systems to monitor rail safety worker health and fitness. It includes a Guideline for Health Risk Management, which provides a method for performing risk assessments of rail safety tasks and assigning risk categories, and is an advisory document developed to provide assistance with implementation of the Standard.
-
Volume 2: Assessment Procedures and Medical Criteria (PDF, 1.6 MB, 170 pp.) is intended for use by examining health professionals and outlines procedures for conducting assessments as well as medical criteria for judging fitness for rail safety duty.
The National Transport Commission (NTC) hosts a range of documents providing guidance regarding the Standard, these may be accessed by visiting the
NTC website.
The Standard, and its implementation, is subject to review by the Regulators. From time to time, information bulletins are released, providing clarification and guidance to railway organisations and to Authorised Health Professionals.
Bulletins can be accessed at the NTC website:
