Your questions answered
Why have licence classes changed?
The introduction of common licence classes is an important part
of the move towards greater national uniformity in road transport.
The new classes contribute to road safety by better
matching of licence classes to the types of vehicles used on Australian
roads. Common licence classes also provide improved portability
of licences between States and Territories of Australia.
Do I need to change over my licence?
No. Although the old licence classes will appear on any Driver’s
Licence issued before 1 November 1998, the Driver’s Licence
will still authorise the holder to drive the range of vehicles covered
by the corresponding new class. See Driver’s
Licence classifications for the corresponding class or classes.
For example, if the old class HT (heavy truck) appears on your Driver’s
Licence, you will be authorised to drive the vehicles covered by
the new class HR (heavy rigid). It is not necessary to change
your licence until it is due for renewal, but you may apply
for a replacement licence at any time upon payment of the appropriate
fee. The replacement licence
will then show the new class or classes.
Will I be able to drive different vehicles under the new licence
classes?
In most cases, yes. The range of vehicles authorised by each class
is described in Driver’s Licence
classifications.
