Theory Test
A computer touch screen theory test was introduced to all Registration
and Licensing Centres and Service SA Centres on 31 October 2006.
The computer touch screen test is offered in addition to the traditional
written test.
You can do the test at
You must do a Theory Test if
- you have not held either a South Australian licence or a licence
from another State or Territory of Australia within in the last
five years
- you have been disqualified from driving for five years or more
- you have only held an Overseas
Driver's Licence within the last five years
- you allow your South Australian Learners Permit to expire.
What do you need to do?
First read The
Driver's Handbook which you can download from this web site
or purchase The Drivers Handbook from any
Service SA centre or from your local newsagency.
The Driver's Handbook
- explains the road rules
- provides information on road safety issues such as crash causes,
driving risks, braking and stopping
- contains sample questions from the Theory Test
- includes handy hints for obtaining your licence
- provides basic information on medical requirements for driving.
The Theory Test is not easy so you will need to study The Driver's
Handbook in detail before attempting the test.
You also need to bring
- Evidence of Identity
which is proof of your signature, your age and where you live
- the fee for your Theory Test
- a medical certificate if you have a medical condition that may
affect your ability to drive.
The Theory Test is available in English only but you may be able
to do an oral test or be provided with an interpreter. Contact your
nearest service
centre to discuss these options.
How to complete the Theory Test?
The Theory Test has two parts, Part A and Part B.
Part A
There are eight diagram questions in Part A where you must choose
which vehicle or pedestrian is required to give way under the
circumstances shown in each diagram. All eight questions must
be answered correctly before you can attempt Part B of the Theory
Test.
Example questions for Part
A
Part B
In Part B there are 42 multiple choice road rules and road safety
questions to answer.
Example questions for Part
B
Passing the Theory Test
You must correctly answer all of the diagram questions in Part
A and a total of at least 32 of the 42 multiple-choice questions
in Part B to pass the test.
If you fail the test, you may re-sit the complete test again on
the same day, after paying another fee. However, it is recommended
that you study The Driver's Handbook in more detail before attempting
the test again.
