Prescribed “L” and “P” plates

The following “L” and “P” plates are approved for use in South Australia.

“L” plate

The minimum size for the ‘L’ plate sign is defined in the diagram below. The sign must be displayed and clearly visible from the front and rear of the vehicle (rear only for motor bikes).

‘L’ plate signs must not be displayed when the driver of the vehicle is not a learner driver (except a licensed Driving Instructor driving to or from a lesson).‘L’ plates must have the letter ‘L’ painted in black on a yellow background.

“P” Plate.

The minimum size for the ‘P’ plate sign is defined in the diagram below and consists of a red letter ‘P’ against a white background. The sign must be displayed and clearly visible from the front and rear of the vehicle (rear only for motorbikes).

Other styles of plates, such as the examples below, are not acceptable in South Australia and displaying them contravenes provisional/probationary conditions and may make the driver liable for a fine and loss of licence.
