Fines Enforcement Restrictions
What is a Fines Enforcement Restriction on
a driver’s licence or vehicle registration?
Legislation provides a number of methods for the courts to recover
outstanding debts. The Registrar of Motor Vehicles can be ordered
by a court to suspend your driver’s licence for sixty days
and/or refuse to transact business with you until the overdue fine
is paid.
These sanctions may be applied for any unpaid fines regardless
of whether the offence is traffic related or not.
How does this affect your driver’s licence or
vehicle registration?
A licence suspension commences twenty one days from when the Registrar
of Motor Vehicles receives the order from the court. The court will
print and post a notice to you. The licence remains suspended for
sixty days, during which time you may not drive unless the fine
is paid or cleared by the court.
Where the court has issued an order to restrict transactions from
you the Registrar of Motor Vehicles cannot process registration
and/or licence transactions from you, or on your behalf until either
the penalty is paid or cleared by the court.
How can you pay or clear the penalty?
To pay a penalty or to discuss options or clear the penalty, you
may apply to the Fines Payment Unit, PO Box 6589, Halifax Street,
Adelaide 5000, at a local court or telephone the
Easy Pay Fines Call Centre on
1800 659 538
Alternatively, to clear the penalties, you may pay the total amount
recorded by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to a Customer Service
Centre.
