Exemption from minimum driving experience requirements

The Registrar of Motor Vehicles may, at his discretion, issue any class of licence to an applicant who has not gained the minimum driving experience requirements prescribed for that class, where the Registrar is satisfied that special circumstances exist which justify the issue of that particular class of licence.

Training in Lieu of Experience courses

Applicants for a class HC licence who do not meet the minimum driving experience requirements can apply for an approved Training in Lieu of Experience (TILE) course provided they have held a class C Licence for at least 2 years.

Further information on TILE courses may be obtained from any Customer Service Centre.

Restricted Licences and other Exemptions

Restricted licences or exemptions from minimum driving experience requirements other than the TILE course may be available (for example, employment in farming, transporting produce etc). Applications will be assessed by the Registrar of a case-by-case basis.

Exemptions are not available for class MC.

Further information may be obtained by telephoning 13 10 84 of from any Customer Service Centre.
