Certificate of Fitness to Drive
You are required to have a Certificate of Fitness to Drive filled
in by your doctor
- if you declare on your application for a Learner’s Permit
or Driver’s Licence that you have a medical condition that
may affect your ability to drive.
- if you are 70 years of age or over, you will automatically be
sent a medical certificate every year to be filled in by your
doctor.
Medical evidence may be required by the Registrar
when determining if a learner’s permit or particular type
of licence should be issued, dependent on the type and seriousness
of the condition/illness.
If you have a condition of
-
diabetes, epilepsy, psychiatric illness, severe coronary
or cardiovascular disease, it may be necessary to have
a Comprehensive Medical Report completed by a medical practitioner,
or in some circumstances, a specialist report may be required.
-
arthritis, coronary disease, hypertension, limb disability,
poor eyesight, it may be necessary to have a Medical
and/or Eyesight Certificate completed by a medical practitioner.
Should eyesight readings not meet the minimum standard unaided,
but are satisfactory whilst wearing visual aids, the permit
or licence will be endorsed so that spectacles or contact lenses
must be worn at all times when driving.
If you think you may be required to submit medical evidence of
your fitness to drive, the appropriate Medical and Eyesight
Certificates are available from any Customer
Service Centre.
If you feel that the more Comprehensive Medical Report would be
necessary, the Medical Clerk who can be contacted through a Customer
Service Centre, can supply forms or may be able to offer advice
following confidential discussion.
Where possible, guidelines drafted by the
Australian Medical Association are used in conjunction
with recommendations of a medical consultant when assessing a person’s
fitness to hold a learner’s permit or driver’s licence.
In most cases where a person is required to take medication
for the treatment of a condition, a medical certificate must be
produced on an annual basis.
Should a person develop a condition/illness during
the currency of a permit or licence, which may impair his/her ability
to drive, he/she is required to notify the Registrar
in writing as soon as practicable.
For more information on medical conditions contact a Customer
Service Centre. Certificate
of fitness forms are available on our forms page for light and
heavy vehicle drivers. These forms do require A3 paper. Alternately
these forms are available from your doctor.
