Boat Operator's Licence Theory Test

Applicants for the Boat Operator's Licence must answer 50 multiple-choice questions on boating rules and safety, as contained within the South Australian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook.

The examination consists of three parts:

  • Part A - 8 compulsory question on navigation;
  • Part B - 22 general questions on boating rules;
  • Part C - 20 general questions on boating safety.

Examination Results

To pass the Licence Theory Test, the applicant must answer all 8 questions in Part A correctly and achieve a total of 32 correct answers from Parts B and C, totalling 40 correct questions out of a possible 50. This equates to an overall pass mark of 80%.

Special Permit Theory Test

Applicants must answer 25 multiple-choice questions on boating rules and safety, as contained within the South Australian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook.

The examination consists of three parts:

  • Part A - 7 compulsory question on navigation;
  • Part B - 9 general questions on boating rules;
  • Part C - 9 general questions on boating safety.

Examination Results

To pass the Special Permit Theory Test, the applicant must answer all 7 questions in Part A correctly and achieve a score of 13 correct answers from Parts B and C, totalling 20 correct questions out of a possible 25. This equates to an overall pass mark of 80%.

Applicants who fail the examination may apply to be re-examined.
