Practical Test for Special Permit to Operator
a Recreational Vessel
A practical test is only required by applicants applying for a
Special Permit to
Operator a Recreational Vessel. After passing the written test
you will need to contact a Transport
Safety Compliance Officer (Marine) to make arrangements for
a practical test.
The practical test
- is conducted at a time and place which is mutually convenient
- must be taken in a suitable motor boat that you provide.
You must also take your completed Application
for Special Permit in the operation of a Recreational Vessel
(found on our forms page) to give to the testing officer.
Before the practical test
We suggest that you familiarise yourself with the motor boat that
you intend using for the practical test and practice the various
manoeuvres you will be required to perform.
During the practice sessions you must
- be under the direct supervision of a licensed person
- not exceed 10 knots.
What will be required of you during the practical
test
You will be required to demonstrate that you have
- safe and effective control of the motor boat
- sufficient knowledge of the relevant boating rules.
You will be expected to show that you
- can judge a speed of 10 knots
- understand which type of vessels permit holders are permitted
to operate
- have a practical understanding of the ‘Give Way’
rules
- can execute a figure 8 turn at speed
- can safely retrieve a floating object during a simulated ‘man
overboard’ exercise
- have a practical understanding of navigation beacons
- can safely berth your boat alongside a structure such as a landing
or jetty
- can list the safety equipment you would be required to carry
on board your boat in semi-protected and unprotected waters
- have knowledge of the recognised ‘Water Ski Signals’
- if you intend operating a boat on inland waters or being involved
in water skiing (highly recommended)
