Lost or destroyed boat licences & permits

If your Boat Operator’s Licence or Special Boat Operator’s Permit has been lost or destroyed, you may:

You will be provided with a replacement licence or permit upon payment of the appropriate fee.

Obligations of boat licence and permit holders

The holder of a Boat Operator’s Licence or Special Boat Operator’s Permit must notify Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure within 14 days of any:

  • change of name or address
  • physical or mental impairment that may affect the licenced holder’s capacity to operate a vessel.

Operating without a boat licence or permit

It is an offence for a person without a licence or permit to operate a motor boat unless the unlicensed person is:

  • under the direct supervision of a person with a Boat Operators licence, and
  • at least 12 years of age, and
  • does not exceed 10 knots

    or

  • is operating in waters defined within a Boat Hire/Drive Business licence issued by Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure.

Producing a boat licence or permit

If requested by an authorised person, you must produce a Boat Operator’s licence or Special Boat Operator’s Permit within 48 hours at a nominated location.
