Exemption from Boat Licence Examinations

You do not have to sit an examination if you have an

  • interstate licence to operate a motor boat
  • Certificate of Competency as a Coxswain, Master or Mate issued by a State or Commonwealth marine authority

or any of the following, subject to the certificate having been issued for an examination held not more than 2 years before the application for a licence

  • certificate of completion of the Australian Volunteer Coastguard
  • Association’s course in Basic Seamanship with an examination pass at level A, B or C
  • certificate of completion of the South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron’s Seamanship course
  • Small Craft Proficiency Certificate issued by Transport WA
  • Australian Yachting Federation Boat Handling Certificate (TL3)
  • Australian Yachting Federation Inshore Seamanship Certificate (TL4)
  • Australian Yachting Federation Motor Cruising Certificate (TL5)
  • Certificate of completion of the Australian Boating College SABL1 – Motor Boat Licence Course
