Aquatic Activity Licence

An Aquatic Activity Licence is required when an organisation seeks, for safety reasons, exclusive use of a designated area of waterway for their aquatic sport or activity such as social and race days, regattas and open swim events etc.

An Application for an Aquatic Activity Licence is available from our forms page and should be completed and forwarded to:

Manager, Policy and Projects
Transport Safety Regulation
Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure
P O Box 1, Walkerville SA 5081
or
fax (08) 8343 2564

Applications must be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to the event. Applicants and organisations must hold adequate Public Liability Insurance ($10,000,000) to cater for:

  • any claim of personal injury or damage to property to members of the public not involved in the activity

  • damage to property resulting from activities during the period of the licence.

The department will provide you with a notice that must be published in specified newspapers and/or publications, at your organisations expense. They will also advise any other special coditions which must be strictly observed, including:

  • speed restrictions

  • crowd control

  • marker buoys

  • safety equipment

  • access restrictions

  • duty boats

During you approved aquatic sport or activity duty vessels must be in place to advise other vessels not participating in the event about passing the closed area. In many cases this could involve a short wait to allow a high speed activity to conclude so that the safety of all persons and vessels is maintained.
