Heavy vehicle Performance Based Standards scheme

Performance Based Standards (PBS) set minimum heavy vehicle performance standards, that focus on how the vehicle behaves on the road, rather than how big and heavy it is.

The national standards ensure trucks are stable on the road and can turn and stop safely. They are referred to as SMART trucks - because they work smarter.
PBS heavy vehicle access maps for the South Australian road network are listed in the table below. Those marked ‘draft’ are currently under development. The networks marked ‘approved’ have been endorsed for use when referred to by a permit issued for the PBS vehicle.

The following fact sheets provide detail on the operation of PBS vehicles in South Australia.
