Mass Module
Accreditation Notices and Information Bulletins
The National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (Mass Module) was
introduced in South Australia on April 2000; the scheme enables
members to operate at higher mass limits on approved routes in South
Australia.
This important reform will significantly increase the productivity
of our road freight industry. By reducing transport costs, higher
mass limits will boost economic growth, regional development, jobs
and exports.
The purpose of the accreditation is to ensure that vehicles do not
exceed allowable mass limits. Under the mass management module,
operators are required to develop a system that measures and records
axle and gross weight of their vehicles when they are loaded.
Higher mass limits only apply to vehicles fitted with road friendly
suspension, in addition to having road friendly suspensions; operators
of vehicles with a tri-axle group must be accredited to the mass
module of the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme.
Not all States and Territories have introduced this reform at the
same time, therefore operators are advised to check with road authorities
in other States and Territories before attempting to operate at
the higher mass limits outside South Australia.
