National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS)
The National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS) is administered through state road and transport authorities using a common set of standards, audit procedures and business rules. On 29 September 2008 South Australia introduced legislation recognising the NHVAS as an approved road transport compliance scheme.
Modules of the scheme include Maintenance Management, Mass Management and Fatigue Management. Operators can seek accreditation in one or all of these modules in the jurisdiction where its registered office is located. Accreditation is mutually recognised by other states and territories that offer NHVAS.
NHVAS is not compulsory. The decision to enter into or remain in the Scheme is at the operators’ discretion and may include measuring the cost of entry and the associated fees, against the commercial benefits gained from membership. The fee structure ensures that its impact is automatically scaled to the size of each operation.
To improve service delivery to the heavy vehicle transport industry the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure will make a number of significant changes to the application processes and systems that manage the NHVAS modules. These changes are expected to be delivered over the 2008 and 2009 financial years with the new systems fully operational by June 2009.
More information on the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation scheme is available on the National Transport Commission website.
