Trade Plates

Effective from 1 July 2008

The total fee for a trade plate is the sum of the trade plate category fee, an insurance premium, plate fee and an administration fee.

Approval may be obtained by applying to a Customer Service Centre or the Motor Trade Association. Approval fees are displayed in Table 2.

Fee Calculation Method

The table below displays the current fees and the method for calculating the total cost of a trade plate.
Step 1 Determine the highest category fee of the nominated categories from Table 1, and multiply by the period required (1, 2 or 3 years).
Step 2 Determine the highest insurance premium of the nominated categories for the appropriate insurance rating (district 1 or district 2), and multiply by the period required (1, 2 or 3 years).
Step 3 Add the appropriate administration fee from Table 3.
Step 4 Add any plate Fees that apply from Table 3.
Step 5 Calculate the total fee payable by adding the fees from Step 1 through to Step 4.

Heavy Vehicles
A vehicle or trailer with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 4500 kg (not farm implements and farm machines and special purpose vehicles).
Fees based on a configuration of a truck (Type 1) with 2 axles and a gross vehicle mass exceeding 4500 kg but not exceeding 12000 kg.

Light Vehicles
A vehicle with a gross vehicle mass not exceeding 4500 kg (not motorcycles, trailers, farm implements and farm machines and special purpose vehicles).
Fees based on a 7 or-8 cyl vehicle.

Motorcycles
Any motorcycle.
Fees based on a 250ml – 660ml motorcycle.

Trailers
A trailer with a gross trailer mass not exceeding 4500 kg (not farm implements and farm machines and special purpose vehicles).
Fees based on a light caravan or trailer.

Farm Implements and Farm Machines
Self propelled or towed agricultural machinery.
Insurance fee based on Premium Class 38/88.

Special Purpose Vehicles
Any vehicle not specifically designed for the carriage of passengers or goods. (Including farm implements and farm machines.
Insurance fee based on Premium Class 29/79.
