From 1 October 2008 a new range of general (standard) issue number plates will be introduced for light vehicles and motor cycles.
Car and trailer plates will comprise seven characters beginning with a fixed 'S' followed by three numbers and three letters (e.g. S123 ABC). Motor cycle number plates will change to a fixed 'S' followed by two numbers and three letters (e.g. S12 ABC). The number plate combination and slogan will be embossed in black.
These number plates will replace the SA The Festival State alpha-numeric number plate (e.g. ABC 123) which have reached the end of the sequence. The new plates will only be issued when the current alpha numeric plates stockpile is depleted.

General issue number plates may be transferred to another vehicle registered in the same name as the agreement holder, for an additional fee and at the discretion of the Registrar. This agreement ceases if the vehicle owner sells the vehicles while the plate is allocated to that vehicle.
The new series is unique to South Australia and will serve the national interest to eliminate duplication with interstate number plates.
The current slogan SA The Festival State and the South Australian Government logo will be replaced on the new general issue number plates with the words South Australia only. Changing this is the most efficient way to identify South Australian vehicles and their state of registration.
Replacement plates will be issued for the old series, until further notice, due to current stock piles of plates.
