All number plates remain the legal property of the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure.
If the registration on your vehicle has been expired for more than 90 days, you are required to surrender the number plates.
Only plates made by an approved manufacturer comply with the requirements of the Motor Vehicles Act. Plates that are not made by a manufacturer approved by the department do not comply and can result in a Traffic Infringement Notice of up to $250. Compliant plates are the reflective, metal embossed type shown on this site. They are available from a Customer Service Centre or Service SA centre.
Plates must be clearly visible from the front and rear (rear only for motor cycles and trailers of all types) and may not be obscured by a tow ball, load, any part of the vehicle's bodywork, plastic cover or dirt build-up or faded.

Fees shown are subject to change and apply to all sizes of plates, a pair of plates in the case of cars and commercial vehicles and one plate in the case of motor cycles, trailers and caravans.

Numeric	Numeric Class Specific Rights are only available by public auction as and when determined by the Registrar until further notice, Class Specific Rights - Issued when Numeric plates are sold by auction. Allows the holder to re-allocate the plate to another vehicle registered in the same name. Plates may be sold and transferred to another individual upon payment of a transfer fee. Restricted Rights – To be eligible to apply for Restricted Rights, the numeric number plate must be the last number allocated to the vehicle and the owner is the last registered owner/operator of the vehicle. Once the vehicle is transferred to a new owner, the restricted rights are lost. Restricted Rights may be granted to a new owner at the discretion of the Registrar where special circumstances apply i.e. to the beneficiary of a deceased estate.

R & S series	Replacement plates for original R & S Series will carry the Festival State slogan unless you purchase re-allocation* rights. Plates which have not been allocated to a registered vehicle for the past 5 years may be purchased for a once only fee which includes re-allocation* rights. Motor Cycle	Personalised or Custom plates may be purchased for display on motor cycles. One plate only is required to be displayed on the rear.	Fees are the same as motor vehicle plates
Slogan	May be re-allocated* to another vehicle registered in the same name for an additional fee. You must re-allocate* the plate before selling your vehicle to retain the plate otherwise it will automatically be allocated to the new owner.	Issue (pair, standard size)	$70

Re-allocation Rights Re-allocation Rights entitles the owner to transfer the plate to another vehicle registered in the same name. Some plates are purchased with Re-allocation Rights as outlined above. For those plates not purchased with Re-allocation Rights (ie Premium, R&S Series, Slogan and General Issue), Re-allocation Rights are available for an additional fee.
