Environmental Management System for Infrastructure Projects

Transport SA’s Environmental Management System for infrastructure projects is a structured approach to managing environmental activities on construction projects for road, bridge and marine facilities.

Environmental impact assessment is undertaken during the planning stage of all projects. It identifies ways to avoid or manage environmental impacts that may arise from the implementation of the project.

Environmental management plans capture the critical project specific issues to be managed on the construction site and provide ways of ensuring that commitments made during the planning phase are incorporated into the design, construction and operational phases of the project. This information comes from the

  • Environmental Impact Assessment
  • relevant legislation
  • standards and codes of practice
  • other government agency input
  • community consultation.

Environmental management implementation plans are prepared by construction contractors and detail how the environmental requirements, as identified in the Environmental Management Plan, will be implemented on site. Construction sites are constantly changing and systems must be in place to review and modify control measures to ensure that they remain effective.

Environmental auditing ensures that the issues identified in the Environmental Management Plan have been implemented and are working effectively.

Environmental Code of Practice for Construction promotes awareness and use of best practice environmental management by field staff during the construction phase. It ensures that construction activities have minimal impact on the environment.

Prequalification
Contractors must prequalify under Transport SA’s criteria before tendering for projects. This process requires contractors to have an established Environmental Management System.

Training programs
Training of Transport SA staff and contractors is undertaken to raise awareness of our environmental management system for construction.

There are 2 environmental training packages currently available to Transport SA contractors. Training for field staff also raises awareness of common site environmental issues and good practice.

For further information on training providers see Environmental Management Training Courses.
